The following is the information for the 2^nd annual Hokie Memorial Chess Tournament that the Chess Club at Virginia Tech will be hosting on campus. Attached is also a flyer, if you would like to help distribute the information about the tournament to anyone who may be interested.

Sunday, November 16^th, 2008 – Squires Student Center – Room 341 & 345

Sections:

Open, under 1600, unrated (non-USCF) – 3 or 4 rounds depending on # of entries.
Scholastic Tournament (K-8): Open and under 800 – 4 or 5 rounds depending on # of entries

Time Controls:

Open, u1600 game-90 for 3 rounds or game-60 for 4 rounds.
Scholastic - Round 1 game-30, later rounds game-45.

Registration: Open, u1600, Scholastic – 9 – 9:45 am
Unrated – 9 – 10:30 am

1^st Round time: Open, u1600, Scholastic – 10 am
Unrated – 11 am

Entry Fee: Open & u1600 - $25 if pre-registered by Nov. 14^th. $30 at the door.
Scholastic - $8 if pre-registered by Nov. 14^th. $10 at the door.
Unrated – $5 – registration at the door only (no pre-registers).

Open & u1600 – 90% of entry fees will be paid out as cash prizes for 1^st-3^rd places in both sections

Chess Club @ the Blacksburg library

The Blacksburg Library Chess Club meets every 2nd and 4th Sunday, from 2-3:30. Open to all ages.

Chess Lounge @ Virginia Tech

Each Saturday, the Jamestown room in Squires Student Center will be open from 10:30 to 5 for open play of all ages. It is hosted by the Chess Club of Virginia Tech. There will be no lounge on the weekend after Thanksgiving, and

the last lounge is on December 6.

Donations will be collected for an inlaid chess board for the campus community, and there will be a Virginia Tech Chess Club member on hand to assist and host the room.

Roanoke City Public Schools Chess

The Roanoke City Public Schools Chess folks host the vast majority of competitions that we will attend. They have a large and strong scholastic chess program.

VT Chess Camp a Great Success!

Thanks to the Virginia Tech Chess Club for hosting a fantastic three-day chess camp at Squires Student Center. The coaches included Derek O'Dell, Chuck Ronco, Justin Burgess, Brian McCabe, and Tom Alston, and many thanks are due them. HAE participants included Spencer & Grant Martin and Dominic Whyte. I certainly hope this will become an annual event! The children received excellent instruction and had an opportunity to meet and play with other scholastic players from across the area. The camp concluded with an awards ceremony for the tournament play.

Thanks to the efforts of many like Derek O'Dell and Chuck Ronco, I think chess is set to finally achieve the necessary traction to gain visibility in this community. (You might have seen Chuck at the 16 Squares booth at Steppin' Out challenging folks to games of speed chess.) There is a lot of existing and up-and-coming chess talent out there!

I might also note that the Blacksburg Library has purchased 10 chess sets and they plan to continue their twice-monthly (2nd and 4th Sundays from 2-3:30) chess club meetings starting in October.

Chess Camp at Virginia Tech August 6 - 8

The Chess Club at Virginia Tech (CCVT) will be holding a chess camp geared towards elementary and middle school chess players. There will be beginner and intermediate/advanced courses of training. The chess camp will be a half day camp on Wed. August 6th – Fri. Aug. 8th in the Brush Mountain rooms in Squires Student Center on Virginia Tech’s campus. There will be a suggested donation of $15 for each day attended. National K-6 Championships

Four students made the trip to Pittburgh, Pennsyvania for the 2008 Bert Lerner Elementary (K-6) Championship. Dominic competed in the K-5 Championships, Marco and Spencer in the K-3 Under 800 division, and Grant in the K-1 division. Over 2100 children from across the US participated, with all but the K-1 division taking place in one gigantic convention center hall, with tables and boards as far as the eye could see! Despite the size and scale, the tournament ran smoothly with two rounds Friday and Sunday and three on Saturday.

2008 Friendly Chess Tournament

We had a terrific Friendly Chess Tournament on Friday, April 25. The children were excellent representatives of HAE and were good, strong, and fair competitors. Thanks to Negin Nazem, Veronica Lippuner, and Robin Manuel for helping to organize the food and logistics and to Chuck Ronco for his excellent job of officiating. Charles Gregory of Kipps orchestrates the event and is an asset to MCPS. Awards for the tournament will be handed out later (we don't have them yet). We'll see if we can do that at the awards assembly at the end of the year.

HAE to Host Friendly Tournament on Friday, April 25th

The Friendly Chess Tournament will be held at Harding this year on Friday, April 25, an early-release day. For those of you who are newer club members, this is a yearly, informal tournament held among the Blacksburg elementary schools. There is no cost to participate, but we do ask each child to bring a snack or set of juice boxes to share with the other children.

Each child will play three rounds of chess against children of approximately his or her playing level.

We hope that each and every member of the HAE Chess Club will stay at school that day to participate in the tournament. The tournament typically concludes at around 4 or 4:30 pm and you will need to pick your child up at that time. Parents are welcome to come for the whole tournament, and I will be looking for volunteers to oversee the playground, help distribute snacks equitably, and help to keep the peace! Let me know if you would be available to help in some capacity on that day.

I'll have more information later including a permission slip that I'll distribute to authorize your child to stay after school that day.

Virginia Tech Chess Club Tournament

Nine members of the HAE Chess Club competed in the Virginia Tech Chess Club's spring tournament, held in G. Burke Johnston Student Center on the VT campus. It was a great tournament in so many respects. The facility, with its massive windows, open three-story plan, plentiful tables, chairs, & couches, and quiet, well-lit tournament rooms, made the day an absolute pleasure for competitors and supporters - win, lose, or draw! Added benefits were the wireless internet, TVs tucked away on the third floor (for any can't-miss sporting events), and the low price all-you-can drink soda fountain. The tournament attracted a number of first-time competitors from both the Blacksburg Library chess meetings, area schools, and home-schoolers. New friendship were forged and connections made...that's what it's all about!

Chuck Ronco, Derek O'Dell, and TD Mike Hoffpauir really set the tone for a well-run, fun day. National Master Russell Potter was onsite for game analysis and coaching. Thanks to this whole crew, and other members of the VT Chess Club for putting together a tournament that we hope will be repeated once or twice a year at Virginia Tech!

Three divisions were offered: Just for Fun, under 1400 rating, and Open. Dominic competed admirably in the under 1400. Other students were in the Just for Fun, playing five rounds against opponents of all ages: Ideen (7th place - 3 pts); Marco (8th - 3 pts); Liam (10th - 2.5 pts); Spencer (11th - 2.5 pts); Matthew (14th; 2.0 pts); Grant (18th - 1.5 pts); Amanda (19th - 1.0 pt). Congratulations to all, and thanks, VT!

Free Chess Engine Software

Chuck Ronco, a HAE Chess Club volunteer and chess teacher was asked about chess software for the students. Here is his reply on some available options. Thanks to Chuck, Derek, Tom, Brian, James (and other Delts) who volunteer their time for the club each week.

Natwarlal - This uses a standard WinBoard platform, it is easy to install, and in quite strong, approximately 2300 when given plenty of time. Go to Options and then Time Control to regulate time settings and therefore relative strength. There are some bugs, especially when cutting and pasting game positions from other programs, otherwise a real workhorse. (The bugs are avoided by hitting Reset Board before pasting a game or position.) This is the msot commonly used weapon in my 'arsenal' because of its simplicity and strength.

Commonly used programs include Crafty and GNU chess, both are bundled into WinBoard by Tim Mann on his webpage. This all-in-one platform and engine is ready to get online immediately to FICS, the Free Internet Chess Server, where I play everyday. If you are new to FICS, I strongly recommend you try it out.

Babas Chess is very appealing to the visual learner, or to those that like a lot of bells and whistles, it has a lot of frames and command tables, real-time graphs, charts, etc. The real advantage is the Analyze command. This is really cool because you can see where you messed up, and it finds (nearly) everything you (and they) missed! It uses Crafty also, but the above Winboard application cannot analyze as well, nor does it display the results as well. This interface actually goes down the mistaken lines, explaining why the computer thinks a line is good or bad, rather than just saying so. The ratings for Crafty vary, but it is on the order of 2700 ELO.

The most powerful program on the planet for free! Rybka (which means little fish in Russian) needs its own platform to run. You first need Arena as the platform, and then you get the engine to run on it. (There are other platforms available, but Arena is free.) Being so strong is a novelty really, but in some circumstances, it finds solutions and avenues to victory that look like the Hand of God is moving the pieces - truly an awesome powerhouse! I don't use it often, mainly because its analysis is hard to read, and it is very time-consuming. (Sometimes its neat to see what each program finds when analyzing the same game.) HIGHEST KNOWN RATING 3155 !!!!!

Both demo versions work well, but installation requires reading the instructions and jumping through five minutes of hoops, but its worth it.

Since you might be new to these programs, *.pgn is the normal format that (I believe) every program saves their games in. Its basically a small text file, *.txt with a different extension. This way you can play a game, say on FICS using Winboard, save the game as Sample.pgn and import it into any of the other programs for analysis. If you aren't interested in saving the whole game, but you want to see what the computer would do in this POSITION, save the position in *.fen format, which is basically the same thing, but does not include all previous moves. (Please note that since the computer doesn't have all of the game data, it may not know if the king has previously moved, and may think it can still castle! But this is rare, and only a worry if the king moved and then moved back into its original square.)

Roanoke City Championships

HAE made a good showing at the February tournament. Sean Paul participated in the Beginner Section and Dominic debuted in the Open section. In addition, our K-3 team came in first place and K-5 team came in second. This was one of the largest tournaments and competition was tough! Thanks to Mrs. Marshall for the spiffy banner we now have to accompany us to tournaments! We are also grateful to Coach Flad, and to Chuck Ronco who travelled to Roanoke to support and work with the team!

2008 Winter Extravaganza Tournament

Harding Avenue attended the 2008 Winter Extravaganza Tournament sponsored by Roanoke City Schools' Chess Club on January 26, 2007. Out students did an excellent job of representing our school's values of sportsmanship and teamwork through wins, losses, and draws!

The K-5 team of Dominic, Leo, Josh, and Liam finished in 1st place with a total of 12.5 points. Dominic tied as co-champion out of the field of 42 by winning all of his matches (although he finished in 2nd due to tiebreaker calculations). Leo finished in 7th, Josh earned 11th place, and Liam won 12th. Given the large number of competitors, it's quite a testament to have all of the K-5 players emerge as trophy holders. Congratulations!

The K-3 team of Marco, Spencer, and Grant, also finished in 1st place with 8.5 points! Marco won all four of his matches to secure the top individual spot out of 24 competitors. Way to go, Marco! Grant finished in 8th and Spencer came in 12th.

We hope others can join us for the next tournament on February 23, again in Roanoke. We had a lot of fun!

Sunday Chess at the Blacksburg Library

We are discontinuing the Saturday chess meetings in favor of a new program cosponsored by us and the library. We will offer meetings twice a month on Sundays from 2:00-3:30. It is open to the public and I am hoping we will have kids of all ages and adults. The best way to learn is to play someone more experienced. They can share their knowledge and help coach others! The meeting schedule is as follows:

Tournament season is here!

We are entering into our tournament season and invite your child to participate in the area tournaments held in Roanoke. Any student in the League group has the necessary skills to compete in the regular divisions while students in the Fundamentals group are encouraged to enter the beginner section. The first tournament will be Saturday, January 26th, with additional tournaments each month. There are two options for participation:

Children who have NOT been in a tournament previously MAY enter the beginner section. It is free and you register the day of the event.
Children who have competed previously or would like to begin earning a USCF "rating" may compete in the K-3 section or K-5 section (which is primarily for 4th and 5th graders)

For option 2, you may preregister for $8 by mailing in your form and payment. These are due January 11, so mail them in ASAP. You may also register on-site, prior to 9 am, for $15. The tournament starts at 10 am and there are 5 rounds of play. Your child will also need a USCF number, which you can get online at http://www.uschess.org/.

Unlike last year, I think it would be easier if each parent mailed in their child's form(s) rather than me collecting them and sending them en masse. But do let me know if your child is attending so I can make sure they are included on the team.

The tournaments are fun, and the children enjoy getting together as a team outside of school. I encourage you to discuss this with your child.

Giving thanks as we approach Thanksgiving

There will be no Chess Club on November 20 (next Tuesday) due to the approaching Thanksgiving holiday. We will meet on November 27 and then again on December 11, which will be our final meeting of the semester. Feel free to join in on our Saturday chess meetings at the YMCA from 1 to 2:30. Those will meet November 17, December 8, and December 15.

I'd like to thank the many folks who enrich chess club for our students. With 39 active members, we really rely on these volunteers who give so generously of their time and talents: Greg Sigalov has been attending our Saturday meetings and providing insightful instruction and coaching; Tom Alston has attended on Tuesdays and challenges us with tactics puzzles that are essential for building chess skill; the brothers of Delta Tau Delta are worthy opponents and patient encouragers; and of course Danny Flad is the driving force and chess aficionado behind the club. We are always looking for more chess-playing volunteers as it allows for instruction with smaller groups of children.

After the holidays we will begin attending chess tournaments in Roanoke, fielding HAE Chess Club teams. These tournaments are entirely optional, but they can be very fun and rewarding and they teach the kids a great deal about sportsmanship. Tournament dates are January 26, February 23, April 19, and May 17. Several families have talked about attending the National Elementary Championship in Pittsburgh, PA on May 9-11. Saturday Chess Meetings are Good Fun!

We've met two Saturdays so far, and have had a nice turnout with lots of focused chess matches, chess strategy puzzles, and exchanging ideas....not to mention some yummy snacks too! New Saturday Club Meetings

We are initiating a new optional Saturday Chess Workshop for our HAE Chess Club students. Join in for some additional opportunities for matches and instruction, learning and fun!

We will be meeting at the YMCA on North Main Street from 1 to 2:30 on the following Saturdays: October 27, November 3, 10, 17, December 8, 15. They have graciously allowed us to use their conference room or "swing space" as available.

Bring a chess set, and perhaps a snack to share. We'd like parents to volunteer to help as needed. It turns out there is much that us non-chess experts can do to help our students. Things include chess strategy puzzles (with answers supplied to us), memory games, and worksheets.

We are kind of winging it a bit, but let's see what happens. Please join us for some enrichment chess that will benefit our students in so many ways!

Hokie Memorial Chess Tournament

The HAE Chess Club WAS the Hokie Memorial Scholastic Chess Tournament

On Saturday, October 13, ten members of the HAE Chess Club attended the Hokie Memorial Chess Tournament at Squires Student Center. Although our students comprised the entire scholastic team, they played in a very professional manner and were well deserving of their beautiful trophies. Dominic topped the K-6 division and Spencer held the K-3 division, but more importantly, all the players learned something and improved their game.

The highlight of the tournament was the special guest, Susan Polgar, a Hungarian-American Grandmaster, and a five-time Olympian, having never lost a single Olympic match. Her accomplishments in chess are vast and innumerable and I encourage you to learn about her at www.susanpolgar.com. Susan played a simultaneous match against 20 players at once, including Leo, Ideen, Dominic, Marco, Spencer, Grant, Devyn, Liam, and Yuhong. What was amazing was her total calm and cool approach, intense focus, and utter silence. She played white on all boards. She began by shaking hands with the competitor, making her move, and stepping to the next competitor. As she circled the tables, the competitor had to make his or her move as she watched then she made her move, almost instantaneously in all but a few cases. Even when a child made an illegal move, or placed himself in checkmate, she communicated this with gestures, allowing the child to fix the mistake. One by one, the competitors fell. Ideen and Dominic gave her a run for her money, with Dominic holding on the longest. The whole thing took less than 90 minutes.

Saturday evening, Ms. Polgar gave a talk about her life, chess culture, and competitive chess, then took questions for quite a long time. Her story is amazing, and a must-read by all, particularly the female players among us. She has faced adversity and dirty politics, time and time again, always to rise above it. Many thanks to the Virginia Tech Chess Club, Derek O'Dell, and Chuck Ronco for organizing this amazing tournament. And I haven't even mentioned the silent auction, open/fun/blitz tournaments. I made a lot of great contacts for possible help for our club.

I hope other parents and students will consider attending some of the tournaments in Roanoke in the spring. It's a great experience for all. And some families are looking into attending both the state scholastic tournament (Springfield) and the national tournament (Pittsburgh).

Final Club Meeting May 22

It's hard to believe that our year is coming to a close already! I think back to fall when we had quite a few timid young beginner players who now bring good basic skills to the board. Among our more intermediate players, tactics and strategies have improved through coaching and informal competitive play, as well as through tournament experience. We will celebrate our successful year with a party on May 22. Please send a snack to school with your child for him or her to share - fruit, cookies, bag of chips, etc. We will supply drinks and paper products.

We are grateful to the many volunteers who make the HAE Chess Club run smoothly. Phillip Manuel attends regularly as do the brothers of Delta Tau Delta. Without their help, we would not be able to provide individual attention or have smaller groups. Several parents have helped out throughout the year and at the tournaments...thanks to all of you!

Danny and Cortney will continue their leadership of the HAE Chess Club next year. Let us know if you have any suggestions or comments for next year - positive or negative (email @ cortneyvmartin@yahoo.com). We'd like to incorporate more instruction next year and give our students every opportunity to succeed. Please consider volunteering to attend and help at our meetings.

Friendly Tournament a Success!

A full thirty-seven of our members attended the Friendly Tournament at Kipps! Way to go HAE Chess Club! Our students were fantastic ambassadors of HAE and upheld the standards of the school community. Medals and pins will be awarded at a later date but before the end of the school year. Thanks so much to all of the parents who helped make it possible for so many children to attend.

Friendly Tournament at Kipps May 1

On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 1, an early release day, Kipps Elementary School will host the MCPS Elementary School Friendly Chess Tournament. We encourage every member of the Chess Club to participate in this fun, relaxed, three-round event. There is no cost to attend, but much fun to be had!

Parents do not have to attend, but we will need some parental help to transport children from Harding to Kipps, assist children at the event, and then to transport them back to Harding at the conclusion of the tournament. The tournament should finish up around 4:30 or 5:00 but feel free to contact Cortney on her cell phone during the tournament if you would like an update on the anticipated finish time.

Refreshments are available at the tournament; please send one snack item with your child to share.

Twelve students attended the April 21 ACC tournament in Roanoke. Each was a true competitor displaying excellent sportsmanship and the HAE values.

Next Chess Tournament is April 21

Members of the HAE Chess Club are invited to participate in the next chess tournament in Roanoke on April 21. A sign-up form went home with your child this week. If your child will be attending, please return the form to school by April 10.
